For a period of nearly twenty years, on-board "tremolo" was eliminated from the basic amplifier front panel. To fill the void, a few "tremolo" effect pedals made their first appearance in the early nineties, the finest of which is still the Vintage Technology "BFD". Most effect pedals drag your signal through a maze of op-amps and other active devices even when the effect is "off", creating an unnatural processed sound.
